Hong Kong-based Cathay Cargo is reconfiguring its Australian freighter setup as part of efforts to “streamline operations”.
The change will see the cargo airline move its weekly freighter flight from Wellcamp Airport to Brisbane Airport from 17 June.
The weekly service is a shared service, also including Sydney and Melbourne, and operates using one of the carrier’s Boeing 747-8 freighters.
The service is being moved to “streamline operations after a thorough review of processes”, Cathay explained in a press release.
Cathay regional general manager, Southwest Pacific, Frosti Lau, said: “We are excited to be bringing Brisbane into our weekly freighter operation and offering suppliers the opportunity to quickly and seamlessly transport their shipments to Hong Kong and beyond from the state’s capital.
“Our Cathay Cargo team have a range of expertise including fresh produce and live animal export, even offering personalised shipment options for unique items that are heavyweight, ultra-long, odd-sized, vibration-sensitive or fragile. Suppliers and agents are in good hands with our team.”
Brisbane Airport executive general manager aviation, Ryan Both, added: “Hong Kong International Airport is the world’s number one air cargo hub, providing our exporters with unparalleled access to global markets to deliver Queensland beef, seafood, and high-value goods such as pharmaceuticals and manufactured products directly to Asia and beyond.”
Brisbane Airport is located around 15 km from the centre of the city, which is the largest in Queensland and also the state’s capital.
Meanwhile, Wellcamp Airport is located on the outskirts of Toowoomba, around 130 km from Brisbane.
Cathay Pacific also operates passenger flights to Brisbane.
Lau also thanked Wellcamp Airport for its support over the last decade, while the airport thanks Cathay for helping establish its credentials as a cargo port.
