Lufthansa Cargo is partnering with IndiGo CarGo as the latter offers support for the German flag-carrier’s transpacific freighter service linking Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam with Los Angeles in the US.
The co-operation, which went into effect last weekend, sees India’s IndiGo CarGo operate an A321 freighter between Dhaka in Bangladesh and Ho Chi Minh City via Kolkata in India.
The aircraft carries freight bound for the US, which will be transported onwards on Lufthansa Cargo’s Ho Chi Minh to Los Angeles freighter connection, said Lufthansa Cargo in a LinkedIn post on 21 July.
Customers can also book space on the full routing from Dhaka to Los Angeles via IndiGo CarGo, as well as via Lufthansa Cargo’s own booking channels.
According to a statement from the Frankfurt-headquartered Lufthansa Cargo: “This collaboration marks another milestone in our commitment to providing seamless and efficient cargo solutions.”
In August last year IndiGo CarGo began operating freighter flights between Kolkata in India and Ezhou in China as it continued to expand its network.
The freighter flights between Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport and Ezhou Huahu Airport in central China’s Hubei Province were inaugurated with a three times a week frequency.
The previous month IndiGo Cargo had announced an interline agreement with Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP) that would see IndiGo gain access to the wider global network of the Paris-headquartered group while offering AFKLMP greater access to the Indian market.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa Cargo is targeting a return to the top three global air cargo carriers in terms of volumes over the coming years.
Speaking at the Air Cargo Europe event held in Munich in June, chief financial officer Frank Bauer explained that 20 years ago, Lufthansa Cargo was the largest carrier in the world in terms of cargo tonne km, but by the second quarter of this year was down in fourth place.
“Our ambition is to get back to the top three, and then we take it from there,” said Bauer.
